L'alimentation et les activités d'hiver préférées

One of the greatest motivations when learning a new language is to see how one can start communicating their basic needs or wants in the new language.

During the past week, Grade 1 and 2 students focused on basic food items and the sentence structure Je n'aime pas...

Here is the vocabulary:
le bœuf
le poulet
le jambon
le poisson
le porc

Grade 3 and 4 students focused on their favourite winter activities.   Here is the vocabulary:
faire du toboggan
faire du patinage
faire du ski
faire des batailles de boules de neige
faire un fort de neige
faire un bonhomme de neige
jouer au hockey

We are still playing games to reinforce our knowledge of the days of the week and numbers from 1 to 15.  Have fun practicing!

Practice makes perfect

Learning a new language is a long journey and the key to success is practice, practice and practice.  It is important to use what you have learned in authentic situations.  By now, students have learned a number of sentence structures that are useful in communicating in everyday situations.  They can greet each other; they can talk about the weather; they can tell others what they like.  Be creative!  Try to use these different questions and sentences in new contexts to create short skits.  That will help you reinforce what you have learned.

During the past week, we have been working on the days of the week:

lundi
mardi
mercredi
jeudi
vendredi
samedi
dimanche

Here is a song that will help you learn the vocabulary:

J'aime.../Je n'aime pas...

We have been focusing on the sentence structure J'aime...  Grade 3 and 4 students also explored the negation Je n'aime pas...  Combining this sentence structure and the vocabulary we learned from the unit St. Valentin, students are able to express what they like and what they do not like.

We have also been playing a counting game.  Ask your child to explain to you the rules of the game!  Some classes are working on counting from 1 to 10; others have tried the game up to 15.  It is our goal to eventually count up to 30.

Some classes started learning the traditional French song Tourne, Tourne Petit Moulin.  If you are interested in learning too, here's the link:

Fashion Show

As part of the unit on Winter Clothing, Grade 4 students have created their own "super models" who will be featuring different winter clothing.  They are encouraged to continue to practice the sentence structure Quand il fait froid, je porte...  Grade 3 students reinforced their learning through a game called "The Lost Twin."  During this game, they had to be able to describe the three clothing items their character is wearing while looking for the "twin" who is wearing the identical items.  Grade 1 and 2 continue to practice the vocabulary for winter clothing.

Students are also learning the days of the week.  Here is a song that will help you with this new vocabulary:
